At 1230 hrs (Eastern Standard Time) on the ninth of September in the year of our Lord 2015, HM Queen Elizabeth II will surpass her Grandmother Queen Victoria as the longest reigning Commonwealth monarch in history, having sat (D.V.) 63 years to date. Previously, when Queen Victoria surpassed the historic reign of King George, commemorative celebrations across the Commonwealth noted this grace by the ringing of Church bells. On the Sunday closest to September 9th, please offer a prayer of thanksgiving for Her Majesty, and if you have church bells, please ring them in her honour at the end of the service.

How did they figure it out? Queen Victoria began her reign as Queen of the British Empire on June 20th, 1837 and died on January 22nd, 1901. She reigned a full 63 years, and a further 217 days. Elizabeth became Queen upon the death of her father, George 6th, on February 6th, 1952. Her coronation took place on June 2nd 1953. Elizabeth will have reigned 63 years on February 5th, 2015. A further 217 days will see Queen Elizabeth 2nd match Queen Victoria’s reign on September 10th, 2015.
Taking into account leap years during both monarchs’ reigns, it has been decided that on the evening of September 9th, Queen Elizabeth will become the longest serving British monarch.
